Why Passivate Stainless Steel? #

Passivation is a widely surface treatment process to improving corrosion resistance parts made of stainless steel, titanium and tantalum. For stainless steel parts passivation only occurs if the mixture of chromium is high enough.

The finished stainless steel parts may have iron compounds on the surface that are likely to chemically react with air, causing corrosion and leading to rust. These iron atom can be removed using Passivation chemical process.

Passivation Process #

In passivation process the stainless steel are immersed in acid bath (nitric acid or citric acid) which dissolves free iron from the surface while leaving the chromium intact. The passivation process removes of free iron compounds or other foreign matter from the surface.

The acid bath creates higher proportion of chromium at the surface allows for the formation of a thicker, more protective chromium oxide layer. Removal of free iron from the surface removes opportunities for corrosion to start. The resulting passive layer provides a chemically non-reactive surface that protects against rust.

The Passivated stainless steel resists rust. Since there is not corrosive materials present at the top layer.
