HSS drill bits solve the problem of rapid tool wear and edge failure when drilling metals at production speeds. Carbon steel bits lose hardness above 200°C, causing the cutting edge to deform and the bit to wander or snap. High-speed steel alloys retain hardness at the 500–600°C temperatures generated during metal drilling, maintaining a sharp cutting edge across hundreds of holes. The M35 and M42 cobalt grades extend this capability to stainless steel and alloy steel, materials that work-harden quickly and destroy standard bits. The spiral flute geometry evacuates chips efficiently, preventing clogging that causes bit breakage in deep-hole drilling. Resharpenability extends service life significantly beyond disposable alternatives.
