Benefits #

Flat washers solve several engineering problems in bolted joints. They spread the clamping force from a bolt or nut over a larger area, reducing bearing stress on the joint material and preventing surface indentation or crushing, particularly on soft substrates such as aluminium, timber, or plastics. The smooth bearing surface allows the nut to rotate freely during tightening without scoring the joint face.
